Responsibilities

1. Blood Collection and Processing: Collect blood samples from donors and patients, following proper protocols. Process blood samples, separating components such as red cells, platelets, and plasma for different purposes.
2. Blood Typing and Crossmatching: Perform ABO and Rh blood typing to determine compatibility for transfusions. Conduct crossmatching tests to ensure compatibility between donor and recipient blood, preventing transfusion reactions.
3. Screening for Infectious Diseases: Test blood samples for infectious agents such as HIV, Hepatitis B and C, syphilis, and other transfusion-transmissible diseases. Ensure all blood products meet safety standards before they are released for use.
4. Inventory Management: Monitor and maintain the blood bank inventory, ensuring a sufficient supply of various blood types. Order blood products as needed and prepare them for distribution to different hospital departments.
5. Quality Control and Assurance: Perform quality control checks on equipment and reagents, calibrating instruments and ensuring they operate correctly. Document and verify all testing and processing procedures to maintain compliance with regulatory standards.
6. Record Keeping and Documentation: Maintain detailed records of all testing and transfusion activities, including patient information, test results, and blood product usage. Ensure records are accurate, complete, and accessible for audits or inspections.
7. Troubleshooting and Problem-Solving: Investigate and resolve any issues related to blood compatibility, quality control deviations, or equipment malfunctions. Collaborate with other laboratory staff or healthcare providers when specialized expertise is needed.
8. Transfusion Reaction Investigation: Assist in investigating any adverse reactions following blood transfusions, such as allergic or hemolytic reactions. Perform tests and analyses to determine the cause and document findings for reporting and follow-up.
9. Compliance with Safety and Regulatory Standards: Follow all safety protocols for handling biohazardous materials, including proper disposal and protective equipment usage. Stay updated on regulations and accreditation requirements from bodies like AABB, CAP, and FDA to ensure compliance.
10. Collaboration and Communication: Work closely with doctors, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to communicate blood availability, compatibility information, and any urgent requirements. Provide consultation or guidance on transfusion protocols and specific patient needs.
