About Sharjeel Qureshi:
I qualified as a GP in 2020 from Wessex Deanery and went straight into partnership. I have been working as an 8-session GP partner. I have regularly participated in practice meetings, taken on an education lead role, and supervised GP trainees at our practice. I arranged educational evenings and lunchtime meetings for the clinical staff. I made the necessary arrangements to make our surgery a Veterans-friendly practice.
During my fellowships, I helped struggling trainees at the university and GP surgery. I actively participated in the annual IMG induction. I arranged sessions to bring trainees and GP graduates together.
I worked as a deputy director of the Primary Care Network (PCN) and Director of the Federation for Weymouth and Portland area. These roles involved working with the secondary care staff. I worked with primary and secondary care Physiotherapy, leg service, mental health and respiratory teams.
At the Wessex Local Medical Committee (LMC) I represented the Weymouth and Portland area. I attended national and regional LMC conferences. I have also made podcasts in collaboration with LMC and NHSE to help IMGs settle better in the UK.
As a representative for First 5 (F5) GPs with RCGP Wessex faculty, I arranged events to bring GPs and trainees together. I attended RCGP Wessex faculty meetings regularly. I maintained an RCGP F5 Facebook page to provide up-to-date information to local GPs.
I have previously worked in various specialities including anaesthetics, ICU/HDU, emergency medicine / A&E, Medical specialities, general practice, surgical specialities and paediatrics.
Experience
I am currently working as a General Practitioner and in leadership roles. Before these roles, I have had plenty of experience as a hospital doctor. I started as a foundation doctor (house officer) for two years as per requirement. I worked in medical specialities before changing my career path to anaesthetics. I worked in anaesthetics and intensive care for almost 3 years. I then worked in emergency medicine / A&E for almost 5 years. During these years, I was able to use the clinical skills that I learned in previous jobs. In view of the combination of these jobs, I am more of a holistic doctor now and am able to deal with a variety of medical conditions effectively.
Education
I completed my general practice training in 2020. Part of the training is provided by supervisors but mostly it is self-learning. You are responsible for your own progression. As my background was hospital medicine, I had to change the way I was consulting patients and how I had start avoiding medical jargon. This made me a more holistic and caring doctor.
